GREENHOUSE PRODUCTION SUPERVISOR
JOB TITLE: GREENHOUSE PRODUCTION SUPERVISOR AT RED LANDS ROSES SEZ PLC.
1.Position Summary
The Production Supervisor is responsible for overseeing greenhouse operations and ensuring all activities align with Red Lands Roses SEZ Plc.’s standards of excellence. This role demands strong leadership, technical expertise in horticulture, and a hands-on approach to team management, compliance, and quality assurance. The position reports to the Production Manager (PM) and works closely with Post-Harvest, Maintenance, and other Production Supervisors.

3.Key Responsibilities
a) Managerial
-
Team planning & supervision:
Maintain staffing levels within budget; manage attendance, off-days, desertions, annual leave, and maternity cover. Annual leave must align with seasonal demands and be approved by the PM. Emergency leave requests must follow company policy.
Conduct regular trainings on key production processes, including but not limited to crop husbandry, harvesting, loss clearing, and also pest/disease identification. Keep detailed training logs and validate staff understanding through assessments. Ensure full adherence to company’s procedures.
Continuously up skill yourself in relevant procedures and proactively seek clarity from the PM, CAOO, or consultants whenever uncertain. Apply feedback consistently.

Performance & discipline management:
Implement monthly KPIs and conduct staff appraisals in line with company policy. Address performance issues through HR-supported disciplinary processes and, where necessary, implement Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs). Ensure team discipline, punctuality, and productivity monitoring against established benchmarks.

Safe and conducive work environment:
Promote a positive and safety-conscious culture. Ensure workers wear PPE and maintain cleanliness in changing rooms. Weekly PPE returns must be made for cleaning.

Motivation and grievance handling:
Provide regular feedback and motivation. Address job-specific grievances through documented and acknowledged processes.

Daily coordination & time management:
Align shift schedules with operational activities (e.g., spraying), communicate updates in advance, and ensure gate passes and pre-approved overtime are managed. Accompany teams during the day to optimize work time, breaks, and transitions.

Communication & reporting:
Communicate work instructions clearly on greenhouse variety boards and through briefings. Ensure proper verbal and written handovers before and after leave.

Compliance & policy adherence:
Enforce compliance with FCM SA, KFC agricultural standards, and HSE regulations. Promptly report injuries and ensure alignment with the CBA and labour laws.
b) Operational & Technical

Greenhouse workflow execution:
Prepare and execute weekly activity plans for including, but not limited to: planting, bending, de-suckering, center bud removal, harvesting, loss counting, and clearance.

Crop husbandry compliance:
Implement instructions from the PM or, in their absence, from the CAOO. Only adopt changes after formal trials and approvals. Ensure all staff are trained on any updated procedures.
Ensure the cleanliness of the greenhouse and surrounding areas is consistently maintained.
Monitor temperature, humidity, fogging systems, and take appropriate actions to optimize crop conditions.

Tools & equipment management:
Issue and track all tools and PPE. Ensure correct usage, maintenance, and report any faults or losses immediately.

New variety crop husbandry implementation:
Execute instructions for new varieties only after formal approval by the Trials Officer, CAOO, and PM. Ensure understanding before implementation.
Monitor and document outcomes of any trials or adjustments. Report abnormalities promptly to the PM.
c) Coordination with Other Departments

Ferti-Irrigation:
Report stress symptoms, plumbing faults, or irrigation issues. Ensure drip systems are clean and correctly placed.

Maintenance:
Submit job cards for greenhouse repairs and report faults in structures or greenhouse plastics.

Post-Harvest:
Collaborate with pre-cool and quality control teams to ensure harvesting standards, including correct opening stage and prevention of mechanical damage.

IPM (Integrated Pest Management):
-
FCM control: Inspect 100% of harvested stems for quality and FCM. Delegate inspections to trained team members in your absence.

Phytosanitary standards: Be aware of greenhouse scouting reports and collaborate with IPM teams to implement control measures.

Awareness & prevention: Ensure your team is trained in FCM risk management and that threats are identified and acted upon quickly.

Agrobacterium prevention:
-
Disinfect pruning and harvesting tools after each harvest.
-
Remove and record galls as per schedule; treat affected areas.
-
Renew disinfectant twice daily.
-
Enforce hand and shoe disinfection at greenhouse entry.
d) Annual Plant Count
Conduct and report annual plant counts for fixed asset inventory as requested. Submit findings to the Production Clerk for update and onward submission to Management.
e) Meetings

Lead daily crop briefings.

Attend weekly Production and greenhouse integrity meetings.

Participate in daily Packing Hall flower quality reviews and implement corrective actions.

Attend trolley quality control meetings when assigned.
f) Reporting Requirements
-
Submit weekly work plans.

Complete and submit reports including:

Loss clearance forms
-
Planting report sign-offs
-
Daily climate readings;
-
Weekly GH report/Greenhouse self-assessment report’;
-
6 months ( for new staff) and yearly staff evaluation report;
-
Tools and uniform issue report/ PPE audit report;
-
Weekly Harvesting Forecast
-
Process overtime authorization forms and submit them to the PM in due time;
-
Process annual leave application form one month in advance;

Other reports at request by the Management;
4. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

5. Qualifications & Experience
-
Education: BSc. in Horticulture or a related field (e.g., Agronomy, Plant Science) – Mandatory
-
Experience: Minimum of 3 years in a supervisory role within a commercial greenhouse setting

Technical Skills: In-depth knowledge of rose production, greenhouse operations, crop protection, and IPM
-
Other Requirements: Strong leadership, excellent communication and reporting skills, fluency in English (spoken and written)
